This written work delves into the manner in which Japan's unique cultural expression, anime, plays a role in the formation and deconstruction of gender. The analysis focuses on the anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena and its cinematic adaptation Adolescence of Utena, examining how they challenged conventional depictions of gender roles and identity in 1980s-90s Japan through their imaginative world-building and storytelling.
